re: The Story of Charis the High Elf

0
This story is a bit long. I hope you like it. I wrote it a long time go about a character I used to have. In a way it is the story of how God turned my life around.

She ran far as fast as she could. As she ran she met up with a bard. A good man by the name of Melodious. She traveled with him for a short period of time, hoping that his music would keep the demons away. On day Melodious told her he had to go to a city where she would not be welcome. She would be separated from him. She began to fear that without him the demons would attack. So during the night she fled.
She came upon a large city. She hoped maybe she would be able to hide out. The demons wouldnt find her she thought. Not among these dregs of society. She came to a tavern. She had never worked before but she asked the owner, an old woman, if she could stay and work as a waitress. She became fast friends with the other waitress, a woman of whom her family gods certainly would not have approved. The waitress showed her the men of the city. The girl was pretty and attracted many men to the tavern.
One day a fellow walked in. He didn't stare at her like the others. She became intrigued. Who was this man? The others would tell her all about themselves, but this one was quiet. She began making sure that she was the one to server him each time he came in to the tavern.
In that city there were warlords that ruled over each section. The warlord would come into the bar to make sure that all the patrons in his domain were properly served. The warlord came in one day and saw that the girl was serving one fellow and ignoring everyone else including him. He became furious and threw the man out of his domain. Not yet knowing much about the man and scared of the overlord, the girl did not follow.
A few days later Melodious came in to town and stayed at the tavern. Plying his trade within. The girl again felt safe, but she knew one day soon he would have to leave again and the demons had once again found her. She knew the city was no longer safe, so again she ran.
She went to the docks trying to find passage out of the cursed land. Whom should she run into but the fellow that had once patroned the tavern. She told him she was leaving the city and asked him if he knew of any boats sailing immediatly that she could gain passage onto. He seemed happy almost overjoyed to see her. He told her that he had just bought a ship called the "Independance". He told her that it was a cargo ship and there were not any passenger cabins but he would take her for free if she stayed in his cabin. At that moment she remembered that she had left quickly and had brought nothing with which to pay for passage on any other ship, so she agreed to the arrangment.
The captain had been on ships before and knew how sailors thought. He really liked this girl and had been oddly drawn to her when he was visiting the tavern. Knowing the minds of sailors and the innocence the girl emitted, he told her that she would have to remain in the cabin during the whole journey. She promised she would.
It was nice quarters, very nice in fact, but she was there alone. The captain would come in at night and barely speak to her. He would work on the bridge of the ship during the day and socialize with his men during the evening only coming back to the cabin late. She felt safe on the ship, but soon she was bored with staying in the cabin. She decided she would just take a look outside the cabin. She never let the captain know about her forays. He stayed on the deck most of the time so she found that she could venture down belwo during the daytime without him knowing. She just looked around. She didnt think she was hurting anything, just trying to relieve some bordom.
She venture to the kitchen and spoke to the cook, the only person other than the captain allowed in the captains quarters to see her for he brought her her meals. The cook was a mute and was able to keep her secret well.
Balar, the steward saw her. He knew of her but had never seen her till now. He began speaking to her and was inticed by her words. He saw innocence in her eyes and was intrigued. He knew getting too close could mean trouble for him so he was friendly but kept her at a distance. The power of inticement that she had was strong and at times even he was caught in it, but he knew the captain and knew to stay back from the girl.
She kept venturing into the kitchens and felt the power her words had over men, not knowing what that power was, just knowing that it felt good to feel a little control. She began talking to other kitchenhands but they did not know about the arrangement the girl had with the captian and they fell under her inticement. She found that the words could also be used on the captian to blind him to her movements down below. She felt free walking around the kitchens.
One day she went down to the kitchen to find that Balar had been reassigned to another part of the ship. She kept visiting the kitchens and talking to the kitchenhands but it wasnt the same. Balar had moved to far from the kitchens for her words to reach him. Her ability to intice was not known much to her. She could feel herself use the words but she used it to protect herself. The men of the kitchen where spellbound but soon she became bored of them. Again she ventured forth.
She found another group of men she could talk to. She found that they, though more resistant to her inticements, could still be bound by them. Balor had been like a toy she could practice her inticements on, knowing they did not have much effect. Thus she had become strong in the power without learning control.
She came upon one. He was a darkelf. She saw he was smart and talked to him. She found she didnt like being around those who easily succumbed to her enchantments. This darkelf was resistant to her and intrigued her with his dark skin and foreign tounge. She began to study his language and he agreed to teach her. He saw the power in her and the weakness of her control over the power. He began casting his own spells. He began toying with her as she had with Balar, but she had little resistance to his magic and became spellbound to him. He used her and when he became bored with her he vanished.
Her fear once again began to grow. How could she have been so decieved? She found that her power was not what she though. She found she wasnt as strong as she had believed. She feared that she wouldnt be able to keep the building darkness that she had succumbed to from the captian. She returned to staying in the cabin for a few days, not venturing out at all. Then she remembered how safe and easy it was in the kitchen.
She tried to control her power but she found that the powers she had played with before began to control themselves. She started talking to a new kitchenhand that had come on board at the last stop they had made. She just talked to him like she had talked to the men back in the tavern so long before, but soon the powers began to show themselves and before she knew it he was also spellbound. She like him and was at a loss. He wanted her to get off the boat with him at the next stop but she was afraid. Her fears began to return and her spells began to break.
The captian feeling that something was wrong, went down to the kitchen and found her talking to the kitchenhand. He drug her up to the main deak and they began to yell and scream. A dragon, drawn by the demons of her past came and started attacking the ship. The captain and the girl, so bound by thier arguement did not notice the ship being burned out from under them till it was too late. The ship began to sink.
As she was sinking the girl realized the demons had come. They had come in without her knowing and had bound her with her power. Power enough to destroy herself and all those around her. She sank deeper and deeper. She heard a voice calling to her from the deep. She told the voice how she had screwed up everything. She knew the voice could save her so she bargained with it. She said that if if saved her then she would follow its lead for the rest of her life. She had gone where she had wanted all her life and now she was drowing. She knew her own direction was useless. She feels a hand pull her from the water and she looses consciousness.
Eli had been enraged when he found the betrayal of thier agreement. He wanted her gone and didnt want to see what she had done. She told him during thier arguement of the darkelf and of Balar. The betrayal had deepened. He didnt care that the ship was falling apart, he wanted revenge. As he saw the girl sinking beneath the waves, he felt pity. He found that he actually cared about her and he knew she was going to die if he didnt help. He found some pieces of the ship and drug her upon them. He saw that she was hurt but the injuries didnt look bad enough for her to be unconscious. He didnt understand how her wounds could effect her so much. She did not wake up. He was at a loss. He began to pray. To whom, he did not know. Sometimes he yelled sometimes he mumbled but mostly he cried. He saw how his neglect had given her a reason to wander. As he did this, he tended her wounds and stroked her hair, hoping that she would get better. The voice came to him and told him that they would have new names she would be called Faithful and his name would be True. Though the girl had not been faithful the name would be a sign for her of her new covenant.
A few days later a ship found them and took them aboard. She was still very and and slept restlessly constantly mumbling. A shaman aboard the ship gave her herbs to help her sleep. The herb did not keep her from mumbling. The shaman, Alondria, explained to True that the girl was very ill and the herb would keep her from awakening. True and Alondria stayed by the girl's side. There were people on the ship from the girl's past who came to see her and talked to True and Alondria about what the girl had been through. Alondria tells True that it was not all his fault and that the demons had a hold and did not want to let go. The herbs gave the girl strength, hopefully enough to be able to fight off the demons.
Alondria began allowing the girl to waken during the day hoping that by doing so she could fight the demons. The girl spoke to Alondria about her past, of the strick rule of the overlord of the city. She told Alondria about the men: the darkelf, Balar, the kitchenhand. The girl wanted the horrible mess she made of her life to go away. The whole time she felt True's presence by her side. True listened to all the horrid stories of her past and how much pain it had caused her. He felt even more how his control had driven her even more to the demons.
The ship seemed to be a hospital ship full of lost souls found at sea. The helpers and the other patients helped her begin to see that she could have a new life. One without the demons. Faithful and True spoke much about their time at sea. They spoke about the voice. The voice told him that what was to come would not be easy. Many on the ship had heard stories about the voice. They called it Adonai. True and Faithful had begun to feel that hearing the voice was special something not heard by many. Their devotion to Adonai grew.
