REDalert Ministries: Are you a follower? Part 2
Are you a Follower?
What do I mean by a follower? To be a leader or even a disciple it must start with being a follower. Who are we following? JESUS CHRIST. I have been varying on the thought of what makes a great leader. Where do they come from? Looking into the epistles of Paul he mentioned a few times about members who were arguing about what follower are they. I have also been reading a book called "FOLLOW ME" by David Platt. I have been studying what Salvation truly means. How many of us are hard believers in the "PRAYER"? In our Christian community we heavily try to reach people by the need to do the PRAYER. The fire isurance from Hell. At first when I looked into this I was having issues because I was not sure what it meant about the "PRAYER" being wrong. The twist that hit me was the word "FOLLOWER". I have seen the phrase "I am a follower, not an admirer". What does that mean to you? Have you ever considered what it means to be a Follower of Christ?
Paul mentions in the Bible "So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away—look, what is new has come!" 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NET). We have read this verse over and over, but what does it mean? We have said in the prayer that we request Jesus to come into our hearts, realizing we are a sinner, and that Jesus died for those sins and rose again on the third day... "CRICKETS" Why the cricket sounds, well what is suppose to be the next step? Discipleship maybe? Even before that, what does it mean to become a new Creature. How are we suppose to become new when we are a sinner. The word "REPENTENCE" comes to mind.
What does it mean to be repentive? We are taught about Joseph in how he ran in the opposite direction when Potifer's Wife tried to seduce him. "REPENTENCE" is a 180 degree turn from what we were. Running from the old man to be new in Christ. Salvation is about a turning, a changing of the mindset. In Romans, "Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect"- Romans 12:2 (NET). We have believed hard on the ability to just pray the "PRAYER" and people will go to heaven, but praying the "PRAYER" is not completely Biblical. The Bible asks us to become followers. So many Christians have done the "PRAYER" but then they do not know what to do next. They try going to church, reading the Bible, and participate with other Christians; but after awhile they become discouraged while others eventually learn. There is a point where they are weak and could be easily influenced. While other so called Christians accepted Christ but they live the life they want, believe the parts of the Bible they want, and still go to church. Have they completely turned and followed Christ? HAVE YOU?
Being "FOLLOWER" is not giving part or some of your life, your energy, or commitment. It is a death to what you want and a zeal for what HE has for you. What was it easier for Nicodemus to follow Jesus than the rich man that walked away sadden? Nocidemus understood that salvation is about turning a new direction and giving up all he had before. The Rich man was not yet ready to give up what he had. Following someone requires you to change, not hold on to things you are not wiling to give up. The first step before becoming a disciple is a transformation of leaving your old ways and willing taking on the way of Christ, the Bible, and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Scripture states, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple" -Luke 14:26 (NET). This hatred is not disowning them or in sin. It is about willing to give up all to follow Jesus. Just as the disciples did when HE chose them.
How does good works fit into this whole situation? We must consider what is written in James. So next Blog we will connect the pieces with Action reflecting who we are as "FOLLOWERS". To become a leader we must first take on the willingness to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Actions have nothing to do will salvation itself but has all to do with being part of the "CHANGE". Have you changed or you the same?
